Adventures in the Pacific Northwest
Day One
These entries will not happen daily dear friends. Much of the time we have no broadband access. This is our second day, and the Animare is a very sweet craft.
She is a Sceptre 36 built in 1986 in Vancouver. Her longest journey took place when she was a baby and travelled to the Hawaiian islands, to New Guinea, Fiji and New Zealand. Cape Brett, Auckland, Bay of Islands etc.
My cousin Walt bought the yacht in 2004. He moors permanently in Puget Sound, Seattle end. Enough background.
We sailed off on 14th July at 9am. Sailing into the wind. Anchored at Useless Bay near Desolation Point. In these names lie a history of harsh wilderness life and barbarism. On the beach are beautiful crude structures built of driftwood. Visitors are invited to climb into them so we did. Dahl’s porpoises danced in the harbour, and harbour seals poked up like champagne corks to watch us. I like trying to imitate different animals, including seals. The seals were not visibly impressed.
Woke at 6.30 am to thick fog. Motored out and fog refused to lift. Making our way to our next port of call was v/sporting to say the least. We were in the shipping channel much of the time and the US military were out in their gigantic ships, coloured----grey,. Like, er, fog. At one point we decided to motor and while Scott and Walt struck the sails, Scott set the yacht’s gears and left me at the wheel. Accidentally he had put the yacht’s motor in reverse, which literally put me in a spin. This was quite dangerous, but we got out of it. Arrived in Port Townsend at 1 pm. Scott a bit seasick and rested. Walt and I went to town for lunch. In a trice the weather changed from foggy fug to bright and beautiful. Along the horizon from which we arrived was a sheet of fog stretched in a silver band. It looked solid and almost had an outline where it ceased. I am writing this sat in the back of the yacht. Soaking in one perfect sunset. They never look the same, but then, there is never two of anything.
